About Tenerife

Tenerife Weather

Tenerife features two different climates. The weather in the north is wetter creating a more verdant landscape, but still dry overall. The sandy southern weather is desert-like, arid and dry. Mind the drastic temperature shifts as you travel to Mount Teide. You may even find snow in the winter!

Overall the summers are dry and long without being too hot, and the winters gentle, Average annual temperatures rarely exceed 30C or fall below 15 making this a year round holiday haven.

When travelling to Tenerife, keep in mind that there are two airports.

Tenerife Sur Airport (TFS)
Most likely your point of entrance and exit caters to the southern section of the Island including nine million people annually usually heading to Los Cristianos, Playa Las Americas and Los Gigantes.

Tenerife Norte Airport (TFN)
Is older and smaller and offers access to Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Puerto de la Cruz, although Tenerife Sur Airport caters to the island as a whole. There are transfers available at both airports, and they are connected by a bus route.

Tenerife Car Hire

Renting a car is usually the desired way to explore the island, especially if you are keen to see more than one place. The competition is high, which means prices are fair. Keep an eye on the insurance coverage. Many agents do not cover island to island insurance. (Link to car hire)

Tenerife Bike Hire

We have an excellent selection of mountain bikes and tandem bikes to rent.

Tenerife Taxis

There is certainly no shortage of taxis on the island and it is a popular way to travel. Be it from the airport or around town one is never far away. If you are staying in one place, this might be a good alternative to renting a car. The cost of a taxi to Fanabe/Torviscas is about 20 Euros and takes just 10 minutes. Please ask the driver for a price BEFORE your journey.

Tenerife Buses

Tisa is the island bus company. It is reliable and safe, always with a reasonable price tag. One tip from 4pm to 7pm the buses are packed leaving Los Cristianos and Las Americas so a taxi may be more expensive but often worth it!!

Beaches
Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas both have man-made beaches, with sand shipped in from Africa’s Sahara Desert. These beaches are favourites with everyone, from families and couples to youngsters partying in both resorts.

The best beach in Puerto de la Cruz is the Blue Flag awarded, black sand, Playa Jardin beach, which also has pretty gardens surrounding the sand. Playa de las Teresitas near San Andres, is one of the best beaches in Tenerife, with imported sand from the Sahara and seafood restaurants nearby.

Dinning Out
If you’re looking for fast food outlets, pubs serving food and international favourites, Tenerife’s holiday resorts have your appetite covered.

Meanwhile, Tenerife’s meals usually feature the bread-like staple, Gofio, used in many of the island’s dishes, and plenty of fruit, veg and fish, although meat is imported for the tourist trade. You’re sure to see Papas Arrugadas on the menu on your holiday, a popular side treat of salty potatoes and hot ‘mojo’ sauce.

One of the island’s main exports, bananas are served in all kinds of ways, with liqueur a firm favourite for tourists.
Evening Flavour
Playa de las Americas is the nightlife capital of Tenerife, with its main party zone, Veronicas strip, packed with bars and clubs and a hub for night owls looking for holiday fun.

The southern resort of Los Cristianos is also known for its upbeat after dark scene, but with a less full-on vibe and an excellent choice of bars and restaurants, it’s also a great family choice.
Shopping
Perfume, designer goods and electronic goods can all be picked up in Tenerife for fantastic prices. Shops line the streets in most major resorts and Los Cristianos’s shopping centre, Vistasur, is perfect for some retail therapy.

If you’re after boutique shops and local goods, the north of the island is the best place to go, while the capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, mixes well-known brands and traditional goods on the main shopping strip, Calle Castillo.
